Drivers of conventional gasoline (petrol) and diesel vehicles are used to filling their tank with fuel in 5 minutes or less. Depending on their vehicle, this fuel can provide a driving range of up to 500 kilometers (km) / 310 miles.
By contrast, drivers of the current generation of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have to plug in for several hours to recharge the lithium-ion (li-ion) batteries on the vehicle. But even then the range is limited, often to 100km or so. This is a major barrier to drivers switching to BEVs, and is also a problem for infrastructure providers because BEVs ‘block’ charging points for hours while the batteries slowly recharge.
By using Carbon-Ion cells in combination with li-ion batteries, recharge time can be reduced to match that of fueling conventional vehicles.
